The winter season is upon us, and just like us, our cars need some extra care to make it through the season unscathed. So here are few winter maintenance tips to help you keep your car in great condition throughout the season:
Check the battery
The battery of your car should be your number priority. Given how batteries work, they are more affected by cold temperatures more than any other part of your car, so make sure to test the battery yourself or have it examined by experts.
Clean your lights and check your wiper blades
More often than not, visibility during the winter season is very poor. This means that you will need both your headlights and wiper blades to be in mint condition. Check if your car’s light bulbs are working well or if they need to be replaced or if the lenses just need a wash. Also, be sure that your wiper blades are in pristine condition because you will definitely need them. It is recommended that you switch to winter blades if you can.
Check your tires
Be sure to frequently check if your car’s tires are well inflated, as tires lose more pressure during the winter season. Check if the tread depth is reasonable too so as to make sure you have enough traction on the road. If you live in an area where it snows a lot then an all-new set of winter tires is what is best for you.
Check your oil
Always be sure to check the condition of your car’s engine oil. Engine oil tends to become thicker when its cold which makes it harder for the engine to run properly. You might want to consider servicing your car before the winter season or just changing to more winter-friendly engine oil types (ask your mechanic about these).
Add some antifreeze to your engine’s coolant
Just like the name suggests, Antifreeze will help prevent your car’s engine coolant from freezing. It is recommended that you keep the portion of water and antifreeze at 50/50 unless advised otherwise.
It is important to always take good care of your car, however, it is even more important during the winter season. So be sure to always put the above tips into consideration so that you can keep your car in good condition but most importantly so that you make it through the winter season safely.
