As the weather starts to get warmer, more of our family and friends are getting bitten by the travel bug! Whether it’s for a week long vacation or a mini-break if you live somewhere particularly lovely or near a major tourist destination often you’ll find your home in demand.
Bed And Breakfast
One of the easiest ways to avoid too much stress is to require all visitors to give twenty-four hours notice, but of course, life has its little surprises, and that’s not always possible. In an emergency situation, such as a sudden illness, car trouble or childcare falling through don’t get too hung up on the details as right now remaining calm is best. Try to figure out how long they’re staying for; it’s your home, so you have every right to ask if it’s going to be a couple of days, a week or a little longer. If they’ve only brought a carry on with them, the chances are they’ll be gone by Monday whereas large suitcases signal an extended stay.
Who’s Sleeping Where?
Depending on the size of your home and how often you have guests to stay your kids will be more, or less willing to give up their room for adults. When it comes to younger children, you can make a real game out of it by letting them create a mini fort downstairs or instead allowing them have a giant slumber party. They’ll be so excited that they get to stay up that they won’t care that they’re sleeping on sofa cushions! Try to avoid asking teenagers to give up their space, if they volunteer then that’s great but at certain ages having privacy is important. Be prepared by letting everyone know it’ll be a squeeze but if they’re sleeping soundly on one of the best air beds on the market then things won’t seem nearly so bad. Don’t forget welcome baskets! Out of town visitors really appreciate some gifts and goodies with extra shower stuff, soft towels, a few snacks and even a spare key so they can come and go as they wish.
Keep Cupboards Stocked
Last minute guests are never ideal but if you keep your pantry shelves stocked and have spare toothpaste, toilet roll, soap, and towels to hand it’s quite manageable. If you realize you’re running low on the essentials that’s ok, once visitors have unpacked and had a cup of coffee you can suggest a trip to the store or say you need to run a few errands and do they need anything? Be aware that they could take this to mean you’ll do all their food shopping too! If that’s the case and you’re presented with a lengthy list do make sure you receive payment in advance. They may be your guests but that shouldn’t mean they can eat you out of house and home for free!
Five Minute Concierge
We’re not saying you need to leave a couple of local guidebooks in their room although that’s always polite, instead just jot down a few of your family’s favorite places along with any info numbers they may need and, of course, the WI-Fi password!
