There are numerous things that can go wrong with a small bathroom. First of all, limited space is something that can pose a problem by itself. Given that we use the bathroom for relaxation and all our hygienic needs, this limitation can have an enormous impact making our stay very unpleasant.
Besides the functional part, tiny bathrooms are also very hard to decorate. Most people have certain wishes regarding this room. Alas, due to lack of space, you will have to adapt and completely change your plans.
Here are some pointers that will help you arrange a small bathroom, both visually and functionally
- Plan ahead
If you are renovating for the first time, you have to understand that bathroom is most demanding part of your home. Unlike other rooms, where you can swap furniture and always try new things, for this room, you have to plan everything ahead so that you have great décor. Small bathrooms are even needier due to space limitation. Additionally, you have to be prepared to invest some extra money.
- Make sure to purchase smaller hardware and accessories
This is an obvious thing for those who have smaller bathroom. Unfortunately, although it is a logical tip, most people neglect it. Instead, some people prefer buying things that they like instead of those that are functional. Always remember: you cannot change available space in your bathroom (unless you are prepared to do some demolition work) but you can change size of items that are put inside of it.
- Arrangement of objects does matter
Next thing which you have to do is to find a proper place for each and every part of the bathroom. If you planned properly, you will be able to tuck in several items one next to another thus maximizing used space. However, you need to be careful not to position everything in one corner or to create piles of things. Even though your priority is to utilize space to the best of your ability, the bathroom should still look nice. It is a trade-off between visual and functional.
- Put focus on one item
When it comes to tiny spaces, distraction is the best weapon within your design arsenal. Normally, everything in the room should have the same general theme. But, it is possible to insert one object which can be totally out of place. Good suggestions are mirrors and flowers. Mirror always stands alone, regardless of the bathroom. You can do amazing things by adding a new frame. At the same time, if your entire bathroom is in yellow or silver color, one plant will definitely stand out thus attracting attention. With this simple trick, your visitors won’t even notice that you are lacking space.
- Choose lighter colors and natural lighting
Any room looks much more spacious when lighter colors are used. Same goes for your bathroom. Instead of experimenting with darker nuances, getting darker tiles and investing a lot of money into something that will have a disastrous effect on your interior, make a proper choice and opt for colors such as white, beige or silver. On top of it, you can add a window to your bathroom (as long as it makes sense, of course). This will illuminate your room making it appear bigger.
- Remove things such as drugs and make-up
We have a bad habit of keeping drugs and makeup in our bathroom. While having make-up nearby makes some sense (given that this is the most suitable room for putting it), drugs are completely redundant. You can put them anywhere else and achieve completely the same effect. Same goes for other items like spare paper rolls and towels
- Put things out of sight
People tend to notice things that are on the same level as their eyes. When it comes to the bathroom, we rarely pay attention to objects which are on the floor or above our head. This is precisely how you can make your bathroom look more spacious. Put things on the ground level. Take wooden boxes or something else that is really short. When it comes to shelves, they can be placed a bit higher, above your head, instead on traditional position which is on the same level as our waist.
