In most cases, mold can easily be cleaned off of a wall with a dry cloth. However, to stop it growing back, you often need to locate the cause of the mold. In many cases, moisture is to blame – mold thrives off of damp conditions. Here are just several common things that can cause this moisture build-up and therefore cause mold.
Leaking water is a big cause of mold. If it is rainwater leaking in from outside, then it is an exterior leak. You can usually determine these leaks by whether they are worse after heavy rain.
Roofs are the most common place to get exterior leaks and it could be worth looking into roof repair if you think this is where the water is coming in. Cracks around windows and doors can also let in water.
Internal leaks tend to be caused by plumbing faults. They tend to be more constant or may correspond with certain faucets being turned on.
Pipes are commonplace for such leaks to occur – you’ll generally have to hire a plumber to fix the problem if the pipe is hidden in a wall. Certain appliances like washing machines can also leak water, in which case appliance repair is needed. An interior leak could even come from a bath or a toilet.
Rising damp is caused by water rising up through the soil. It can weaken foundations and cause subsidence as well as encouraging mold to thrive.
Rising damp can usually be prevented by installing a damp proof course – this is a protective membrane that sits around the base of your home. Occasionally damp proof course can get damaged, which could cause mold to start growing back.
Another cause of mold could be wet clothes. Hanging wet clothes around your home – or alternatively dumping a pile of damp clothes on the ground – can lead to moisture build-up. You’re much better off hanging clothes outside to dry or using a tumble dryer.
Lack of ventilation
Regular condensation can also sometimes be enough to start mold growth. The best way to prevent this is to keep your home ventilated. This could include leaving windows open or adding an extraction fan to typically humid rooms such as the bathroom.
